Lateral Transfer Opportunities


The Salem Police Department is currently accepting applications to fill four (4) Civil Service vacancies for the position of Police Officer via a lateral transfer.  Applicants must have completed a full-time MPTC approved police academy and have civil service status under Chapter 31.  Applicants must be eligible for lateral transfer from a civil service police department. We are seeking experienced Law Enforcement Officers who are committed to the tenants of 21st Century Policing and safe communities. 

Salem Police Department:    
Currently the Salem Police Department has 96 sworn officers.  The City of Salem is approximately eight square miles and home to roughly 43,000.  The City is also host to Salem State University, North Shore Medical Center, the J. Michael Ruane Courthouse, a vibrant waterfront and many local businesses.  During tourist season and when the University is in session the population can increase to 100,000.  The City of Salem borders the cities of Beverly and Peabody and the Towns of Marblehead and Swampscott. The Salem Police Department is accredited by the Massachusetts Police Accreditation Commission and is a proud member of N.E.M.L.E.C.

Benefits:        
Salary range is $ 52,720 - $58,475 plus additional stipends if eligible.  Various other contractual benefits include educational stipends, vacation, personal and sick time.  Health Insurance premiums are covered at a rate of 70/30% with the City.
