Butler named Salem Police Chief

I am very excited to announce to you that I will be appointing Captain Mary Butler to be Salem’s next Chief of Police. Throughout her career Mary has demonstrated the utmost integrity and professionalism in her approach to policing and true leadership within the department. We were very fortunate to have three exceptionally strong finalists for this position. In the end, I believe the department and our City will be best served by the appointment of Chief Butler.

Chief Butler has indicated to me that one of her first actions will be to undertake a comprehensive review of the department’s policies and structure. A component of that will be a listening tour with our neighborhood associations, business community, elected officials, and members of the department. I hope you will participate in this initiative. The conclusion of that effort will be her report later this spring on how best to organize and reform the department to continually improve on the good work already underway there and provide a path forward.

The Chief’s official swearing in ceremony will be held later this month at Old Town Hall. I hope you will attend this special event and that you will take the opportunity between now and then to join me in congratulating Chief Butler on this exciting news.
